Learn the Kanji and Vocabulary Essential for Academic Japanese
This book is designed to help learners acquire the kanji and vocabulary needed to read and produce specialised texts, reports, and presentation materials across both the humanities and sciences. It aims not only to teach these items efficiently, but also to develop the ability to infer the reading and meaning of unfamiliar kanji compounds.
Key Features:
Carefully Selected Vocabulary – Covers both receptive and expressive vocabulary, with an emphasis on language needed for listening to lectures, participating in discussions, and giving presentations. Accent patterns and sound changes are included as study items. The book introduces 388 kanji (Level 1: 125 characters, Level 2: 259 characters, Level 3: 4 characters) and 1,072 vocabulary items.
Suitable for Class or Self-study – Although intended for classroom use, the book comes with a separate answer booklet for all exercises, making it ideal for independent study as well.
For Both Kanji and Non-kanji Background Learners – Each kanji entry includes English translations, simplified and traditional Chinese characters, Korean meanings, and Korean on-yomi readings.
Theme-based Vocabulary Learning – Each lesson is built around a theme, introducing vocabulary related to that theme. By learning each item in a thematic context and linking it with other related words, learners gain a deeper understanding of meaning and usage, and improve retention. The kanji that make up the “theme vocabulary” are designated as “study kanji,” while other high-frequency examples outside the theme are presented with sample sentences.
Note: Some copies have different cover designs, but the content is the same.
