Kotobuki Shiriagari Boldly Reimagines Hokusai’s Ukiyo-e Masterpieces
Kotobuki Shiriagari, a manga artist and contemporary artist known for his gently satirical take on the absurdities and contradictions of modern life, offers a unique parody collection based on the works of the legendary ukiyo-e master Katsushika Hokusai. Featuring around 80 playful and whimsically reinterpreted works, this collection includes bold reimaginings of iconic pieces such as Fine Wind, Clear Morning and The Great Wave off Kanagawa from Hokusai’s renowned series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji.
This volume brings together artworks exhibited at the popular shows A Slightly Amusing Almost Thirty-Six Views and Shiriagari-san Meets Hokusai-san, both held at the Sumida Hokusai Museum in Tokyo’s Sumida Ward. Each parody work is paired with the original Hokusai piece it references, including selections from Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, A Tour of Waterfalls in Various Provinces, and Hokusai Manga, offering readers a glimpse into the breadth and brilliance of Hokusai’s artistic range.
Presented in a bilingual Japanese–English format.
